Caroline Herschel, British- German astronomer was born.

Caroline Herschel discovered eight comets. She was the first woman to be paid as a scientist and be awarded the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society, The periodic comet 35P/Herschel–Rigollet, bears her name.
