Mary Alice Nelson Archambaud otherwise known as Molly Spotted Elk was born. Mary Alice Nelson Archambaud was an international and spellbinding native Penobscot Indian dancer and aspiring writer was born. She built bridges between cultures, used her knowledge of anthropology in her lecture and dance recitals.

"Der Wald" a one-act opera written by Dame Ethel Smyth was performed at the Metropolitan Opera. To date is the only opera written by a woman to be performed at the Met.

Caroline Herschel, German-English astronomer was born. Caroline Herschel discovered eight comets and was the first woman to be paid as a scientist and be awarded the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society.
